Remodel: Week 12

Week 12: July 19-23
This was the twelfth week of our remodel, we have 1.5 weeks until project end. This week the tile work was completed. This included the kitchen backsplash, the fireplace, and the remaining bath tile. All the tile work looks amazing and adds our personality to the rooms. A lot of the hardware was installed, including most of the knobs/pulls in the kitchen and the door knobs. The contractor worked on figuring out how to make the rollout baking station work in the kitchen. One of the bottom cabinets is topped with marble and rolls out to provide a working surface for dough, cookies, and candy.

In week 13th the plumbing and electrical will be completed. It will be exciting to have a working toilet again and working faucets in the kitchen and bath. There is also a final coat on the floors and our original cast iron bathtub will be repolished. Since the floors and bathtub work is stinky, the cats will be out of the house the end of the week.

Remodel: Week 11

July 12 - 16

Painting occured this week. All the walls, ceilings, moldings and doors were painted this week.

The counter tops were also installed. We are using the same counter tops in both the kitchen and bathroom. The new sized cabinets arrived and were installed, one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom. We are still figuring out how to install the rollout baking unit in the kitchen. Hopefully we'll have it sorted out in Week 12.

The completion date has been set as Aug 4th which means 2.5 weeks to finish. There is still plenty to finish. In Week 12, the kitchen backsplash tile and fireplace tile will be install.

Remodel Week 10

July 4-10

Although Week 10 was a short week due to Monday being a holiday, a lot of work took place. The windows arrived and were installed. They look amazing! The three windows are the backside of the house allow a huge amount of light in the house.

The countertops were patterned and will be installed during Week 11. A lot of the finished carpentry was completed, which included the floor, door and window moldings. We are using the original interior doors and these were hung back up with new hinges.

This coming up week, Week 11, the painting will done. We are excited to have color on the walls.

Remodel: Week 9

Week 8: June 21-25
So I didn't get a chance to take pictures for last week, Week 8. In Week 8 the floors were done. This included new wood floors in the kitchen, patching the floors where walls were taken down, and then completely refinishing the floors throughout the house. The only room upstairs without wood floors in the bathroom. The floors were covered over before I could get pictures taken.

Week 9: June 28-July 2
The beginning of the week the floors had the finish put on. We had to take the cats out of the house for a few days as the finish smells. Genie and Lonnie graciously took in the cats until we could allow them back into the house on Wednesday evening.

The cabinets arrived on June 30th and installation began. There are a few issues with missing pieces and incorrect sizes, but hopefully these will be resolved without delaying the project. So far the cabinets look great and I'm excited to have the appliances put into place. We bought the appliances back in March and they have been sitting down in the garage patiently waiting to come upstairs.

The bathroom tile has been installed. The work on the bathtub/shower tile started in week 8 and was finished in week 9. The floor was tiled in week 9. Still needs to be grouted, but all the tile is laid and looks amazing. The tile installer suggested we do the fireplace as well while he is working at the house. Having the fireplace re-done has been on my list for years, so I ran over to the tile store and figured out a pattern and picked out tile. The fireplace tile should arrive on July 16th for installation. We'll also have a new mantle and molding installed.

Week 10 is a short week since Monday, July 5th is a holiday. Hopefully the windows will make their appearance this week. The windows were ordered back in the first half of May, and we've been eager for them to arrive. Also, the countertops should be patterned this week for installation in Week 11.

Per our contractor, it seems that the estimated 12 week project will end up being a 13 or 14 week project. Aside from finishing the cabinet installation, window installation, and countertops, there is the kichen tile backsplash, the under-cabinet lighting, the kitchen hood and dishwasher to install, the painting, the interior doors to install and finish carpentry.

Week 7: June 14-18

The new back door was also installed. It looks a million times better then the old door.

The floors go in next week.

Remodel: Week 6

Week 6: June 7 -11
This week the drywall went up and the taping and mudding started. No more views through from the kitchen into the bedroom.

I finally selected and purchased the cabinet hardware for both the kitchen and bathroom. I also purchased the pocket door hardware, the back door knob and hinges and the replacement hinges for the all the interior doors as the original hinges have been painted over and over.

Week 5: Remodel

Week 5: ended June 4th
We entered the month of June in week 5. It was a short week of work as Memorial Day was on Monday, May 31st. During week 5, there was both a framing and insulation inspection. Comparing pictures from Week 4 and Week 5, hopefully you'll note that insulation went in during week 5. On Friday, the sheetrock was dropped off as this will be installed in Week 6.

We also made a small change on the bedroom closet. Originally we were going to have two doors; reuse the current bedroom closet and then use the old hall closet door as a second bedroom door. Our contractor put the two doors next to each other and realized they did not match in size. So we are down to having one closet door.

I am still finalizing the the cabinet pulls/knobs...too many choices. Hoping week 6 will involve a decision on on the pulls/knobs. Also need to buy new door hinges as the original ones have been painted over numerous times.
